Who qualifies for VAT relief on a mobility scooter purchase

Depending on various health situations, our customers can qualify to buy our mobility products VAT-free or with smaller VAT, depending on the country. According to law, VAT relief on scooter purchase can only happen if it is bought for personal and non-business use.

In UK VAT exemption can be claimed by chronically sick or disabled, His Majesty’s Customs & Revenue (HMRC) defines it as:

  • physical or mental impairment which has long-term and substantial adverse effect upon your ability to carry out everyday activities.
  • condition that  the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes.
  • terminal illness.

Temporary mobility impairments (twisted ankle, broken leg) do not qualify for VAT exemption.

Old age does not automatically exempt someone from VAT. Depending on the country, seniors might be eligible to not have to pay full VAT.

Which mobility products from velobike qualify for VAT exemption

If you already know that you are eligible for VAT relief on scooter purchase, then products, that fall within Mobility scooters, category can be bough VAT free.

According to www.gov.uk which is the UK law on repairs, maintenance and adapting goods to products that were sold VAT-free states:

“You’ll not have to pay VAT on repairs or maintenance of eligible goods that were zero-rated when you bought them. Also, you’ll not have to pay VAT on the cost of having goods adapted to suit your disability (the cost of buying any goods that are to be adapted will be subject to VAT as normal).”

What do you need to claim

When buying at our store, you do not have to do anything but order the desired product. All VAT relief on scooter and other goods works only by self-declaration. This means that on delivery, you sign a form stating that you met the criteria for “chronically sick or disabled”. NHS or independent medical assessment is not required in any capacity.

The empty form can be either downloaded from https://www.gov.uk/ and prepared before the driver arrives. It can be filled together with them on the delivery. In case of questions, we encourage you to contact our customer service.
