Can mobility scooter batteries be repaired?

The question if mobility scooters batteries can be repaired has surfaced numerous times. It is one of the most vital questions that often is asked by long-time mobility scooter users. In this short article, we will bring about not only a solution to the issue but also a few tricks to make batteries last longer.

Let’s start with the reason why a battery might deteriorate faster than expected, even though there is a half-year warranty on it, and you know it is still pretty new. In the case of all lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, what matters is continuous usage. Non-used, left discharged for a long time, or constantly plugged into a charger forever. Those are the majority of issues that make the batteries lose their voltage much faster than intended. If it drops, the charger might no longer work on them. Thankfully this might not be the end of the road for those batteries yet.

How to repair batteries for electric scooters?

Let’s focus firstly on lead-acid batteries. First, what should be done is reading the voltage. If for example your battery should be 60V, and it dropped to 50V, it is only logical that a 60V charger won’t be able to charge it up properly any more. This however does not always mean if the battery should be replaced, especially if it is still quite new. To fix such a battery, it would need to be taken out and all cells should be disconnected. A battery usually has four or five of those. Then, each cell should be separately charged with 12V power. Once done, the cells need to be connected again as before and this should up the total voltage back to normal, thus reanimating the battery.

Can mobility scooter batteries be repaired if they are lithium-ion? Certainly yes, however the process is much more difficult, and we advise buying a new one. However, it is possible to attempt revival of them as well. In case the battery no longer charges, and there are no changes in voltage after an attempt to charge has been made, there is one, final solution. A lithium-ion battery would have to be put in an airtight bag and put in the freezer for 24 hours. Be sure to not let any moisture get into it, as this could damage the battery permanently. After that time, take the battery out of the freezer and let it thaw for 8 hours to the room temperature. After that, attempt to fully charge the battery and if it works, your electric scooter is ready to go!

How to extend longevity of mobility scooter batteries?

We hope that the above mentioned solutions can get your mobility scooter batteries repaired. Lastly, we would like to share some tricks and tips to extend the longevity of those.

Trick number 1: Always let the batteries work, at least twice a week. You don’t have to ride the scooter, but simply turning it on for 5 minutes is enough. This allows the battery to be in motion and keep its voltage longer.

Trick number 2: Storage is important. Obviously, moist, wet places are not a good environment to store such items. Low temperature is okay, especially for lithium-ion batteries, but try to get the optimum room temperature if your scooter is stored.

Trick number 3: Don’t overcharge. The battery has its life cycles, usually 600 of them, which should last easily about two years. However, if the scooter is charged, it’s best to not leave the charger plugged in, as it still is working. This might also lower the longevity.

Do it yourself – Take care of your scooter

It has been a while, but do you know how to take care of your scooter? In this blog post we want to focus on simple day to day maintenance checks, which can be done every so often to ensure that your mobility scooter will run as smoothly as possible.

It is very common that proper usage of the vehicle means you should also take care of your scooter. By doing so, you make sure that the machine will perform to its full capacity and extend it’s longevity.

There are numerous ways of proper care and in this short post we have selected the most important and vital ones. They might seem simple enough, but believe us, it’s those small things that are quickly forgotten.

Don’t let nature claim your vehicle

Humanity vs Nature is an ongoing conflict since many years ago. It’s certainly not the first time you have encountered overgrowth or rust which happened due to humidity. The best way to take care of your scooter is to always keep it safe and warm.

You just wouldn’t believe us, how many times we see scooters being left without proper rain cover under heavy rain. Of course rain can always catch up with you as you ride. What to do then? Simply use cloth to get rid of excess water and let the remaining one dry up, before using the vehicle.

Did you know that humidity is often the main cause of squeaking wheels? That is because brake pads become inflated. However, it isn’t anything to worry about, they will return to normal by riding the scooter.

Proper conservation is the key

If you are interested in daily day-to-day conservation, here’s what we recommend at Velobike.

First are the tyres, the most vital part. If you ride daily, they do get used up, so it is always a good idea to check on the pressure. If you lack the proper tools, that can be done at every gas station that you pass!

Speaking of tyres, a good tool to use would be K2 tire-doctor. Not only can it replenish missing air, in case of puncture, it can also fix that up for you. K2 is a product we are familiar with and use them to keep the scooters in pristine, shiny condition, so we really recommend giving those a go!

How to lock scooter steering wheel?

To answer the common question about how to lock the scooter steering wheel, we have prepared a short guide. Not only that, we will also answer the questions regarding the secure boot under the seat. Stay with us and learn how to operate your scooter!

One of the first steps to make is to determine, which model do you have. It might seem unimportant, but depending on that, different rules might apply to your vehicle. From there, this handy guide that comes next should answer all of your questions.

Step by step – How to lock scooter steering wheel

As we have mentioned before, first comes determining the model of your scooter. If you own either ZT15, ZT63, FASTER or CRISTAL model, then the option of locking steering wheel is available to you.

The process of locking is very simple:

  1. First you have to turn the steering wheel to the left side. In case of ZT63 you might want to try to move it slightly about.
  2. While having done so, with the ignition key in the lock, you have to press it in and then turn it counter-clockwise.
  3. Congratulations, you have successfully managed to lock the steering wheel.

The process of unlocking the steering wheel is likewise simple, by just using the ignition key.

How to lock and unlock secure compartment and lockbox

This one is a bit more tricky, because there are differences depending on the model you have.

In the case of the models ZT15 and FASTER, apart from the ignition key, you would have received one that is used to open it. To do so, simply put the key in the lock on the back of the scooter and turn it, which will open the compartment for you.

If you have our CRISTAL or ZT63 model though, the secure compartment is opened by the ignition key into the main ignition lock and turn it counter-clockwise without pressing it in, as that is used to lock the steering wheel as mentioned above.

If your scooter comes with a secure lockbox in the back, the only key to be used is the one that you have received alongside the ignition key.

We hope this short post has answered all your questions about how to lock scooter steering wheel and storage. In case of additional questions, always feel free to contact us.

How to maintain mobility scooter properly?

Do you want to know how to maintain mobility scooter the best way possible? At Velobike we often receive this question.  This is why we have decided to answer it to the best of our ability. Here you will learn how to store and maintain your precious vehicle!

It is no big surprise that when you decide to buy a vehicle from us, you would wish to maintain mobility scooter the best way you can. We could go in deep details on this as specialists. However, we believe that you, our dear reader, would rather know the most important basics fists.

Thus, we have concluded that storage of the scooter as well as taking care of the battery would be the most important two things.

How to store electric mobility scooter?

The perfect storage for your mobility scooter would definitely be in a dry, clean space like a garage or shed. It might seem trivial but moisture is the worst enemy as it can have negative impact on your battery longevity and brakes.

Did you know the brand-new scooter can start off with squeaky wheels in the beginning until the brakes settle in? If the scooter was used for some time and you notice that your wheels start to squeak, the issue in most cases can be related to brake pads which grew bigger due to constant exposure to water. The issue will fix itself after riding a few hundred meters but this is already a signal for you that maybe the scooter needs to be kept more secure from moisture.

When picking a storage place, a wise choice is one with electricity socket which would allow you to charge it at the same time. You should also keep it locked, to avoid any possible theft.

Is there anything else you should be aware of?

  • Keep it clean to prevent dirt from getting into any moving parts,
  • Regularly check underside of the scooter to remove any obstructions,
  • Keep the scooter dry to avoid corrosion,
  • Buy a cover to keep it from dust

Can the scooter be stored at home? There is no reason not to as they aren’t that big!

How to charge and maintain scooter batteries

How to perfectly maintain mobility scooter batteries? You won’ be the first one that asks about this. Most mobility scooters you can buy over internet have only two 12-volt rechargeable batteries that come in varying sizes. At Velobike, all of our scooters come with  powerful batteries either 48V or 60V battery which will last long rides.

It is a good practice to always keep the battery charged after any longer ride. Our experts advise to absolutely never allow the mobility scooter battery to be completely depleted and stay in garage without charge for longer period as it might damage the battery.

Properly maintained, all of the batteries would be able to last up to two or three years (in some cases even five), after which they would need a replacement around 300£.

It usually takes between 8 and 10 hours to charge the scooter, so it is best to do it overnight
