One awesome thing about mopeds is that you only need to be at least 16 years of age. By finishing the compulsory basic training (CBT), you can ride such vehicles and get faster. If you work in an office or maybe have school you need to get to and don’t like taking a bus, this would be for you.

Want to get to that far away shop for certain goods that you need but don’t have full drivers licence? You can do it much faster with a moped which doesn’t require it. But what exactly is a difference when comparing scooter vs moped?

What is a moped and what is a scooter?

Let’s begin with moped scooter first. Generally, all mopeds were originally equipped with motor and pedals, hence the name moped. Nowadays though, they no longer need pedals at all and are mostly defined by their engine size, speed and output.

Most common way to classify vehicle as moped is if the engine size is 50cc or less and its top speed does not go for more than 28 mph (ca. 45 km/h). For electrical mopeds, the 50cc counterpart would be equal to 1200W engine. Often they are smaller than regular scooters, despite having larger wheels. Those looking for their first ride will definitely pick them as mopeds are generally cheaper.

Now let’s focus on the scooter. Like mopeds, they have a step-through frame, however unlike them, they have much bigger engine which ranges from 50cc to 750cc. Obviously, they are much more expensive. Technically they have smaller diameter wheels than mopeds.

To sum up moped vs scooter difference, any vehicle with a platform to put your feet on while riding is a scooter, but only machines of 50cc or under can be legally classed as mopeds.
